Amazon.Com Is Down
June 6th, 2008 Posted by ChanyaI visit Amazon.com way more than I should. So you can imagine my surprise to find that Amazon.com is down. It’s been unavailable for some time now. This error appears:
Now, shouldn’t a mega site like Amazon.com have backup servers? You’d think they’d have backup servers for their backup servers. Not to mention entire teams of people responsible for making sure the site operates properly.
An Amazon.com customer-service representative said the Amazon outage was due to a web site upgrade. Sounds like they may want to revisit their change management process.
With an annual revenue of close to $16 billion, Amazon.com makes about $30,000 every minute via its website. This outage reportedly cost them close to $2 million which is peanuts to them I’m sure. Shares of Amazon stock were down this afternoon 3.88% and closed at $80.63.
I don’t know when I’ve known a large site like Amazon.com to have problems. But there you have it.
Amazon.com is down. Or is it just my computer? Is anyone else seeing this problem? It’s now 2:00pm EST.
Update: The site was up at 3:23pm EST but is now back down again at 3:50pm. This error is now showing:
That’s okay. I need to work on a site setup anyway.

Wow - weird. Maybe there servers are being affected by the storms - I don’t know where they are located. But I got the same error as you. Hmm.
your right, and now the first page will come up but no other? Things for the post or I would have though it was just my computer
Teeni and cmanbrazil: Even though the revenue loss is minimal considering how much the site makes annually, I’m sure someone at their company was sweating bullets for a while there.
