My SERP Success Story Or, How to Kill Dog for Cooking

December 30th, 2007 Posted by Chanya

As you may know, I’ve been gobbling up the teachings and blog tips of Vic, Grizz, and Courtney for the last few weeks.  One thing they all talk about is how to write posts so your site ranks high in the search engine results pages (SERPs).  I’ve only recently paid attention to keywords so it’s no wonder that my SERP rankings suck for my main keywords.

Until now.

It appears that I’ve found a key phrase that I rank high for.  The phrase is “how to kill dog for cooking.

Someone from outside the US did a Google search for that term and found my site.  They specifically found my post titled “Cooking 101: How to Kill a Blog“.  However, if you Google the term “how to kill dog for cooking” (no quotes) sure enough, I’m #8 on page one!

Yahoo!

Oh no, wait, that’s not good.  That means there’s someone out there seriously looking for information on that procedure.  However according to Wordtracker, this guy (why do I assume it’s a man?) is probably the only person on the planet looking for that particular phrase.

So, I can’t really be happy about this since there’s almost no search traffic for this keyword phrase.  Which means there’s no opportunity for me to set up a niche blog.

No, no, just kidding folks, ahem.  What I meant to say was “I can’t be happy about this because it represents a heinous act.”

But it does give me an opportunity to experiment to see if I can move up in the SERPs for that term since I’ve now mentioned “how to kill dog for cooking” 3 times.

Now, if you search for “how to kill a blog” (no quotes) you’ll see that I’m on page 2, even though I wrote an article that includes that exact phrase.  Using the blog tips I’ve learned from Vic, Grizz, and Courtney, I can assume I’m on page 2 because of the number of articles that have been written on that subject and the fact that the sites (where the articles reside) have higher page rankings than BlogStruk.

So, I’ll simply celebrate the fact that I’ve learned enough about SERPs to write this article and hope that the person who typed in that search term made a typo.

I just searched for “how to kill dog for cooking” and you’re number one.

I also did a quick review of your post on stumbleupon — just quotes from your post — hope it gets you some traffic!

Mike: Thanks so much for the Stumble! And hurrah, at least I’m #1 in something, albeit for a search term that freaks me out a little.

I just did a search on Google, and you’re still number one for this search phrase.

Success at last. I can now sell this blog and retire on the profits.

In a sense it’s just another long tail term right? I decided not to play the niche card with my latest blog. I’m writing more for myself and the topics (all over the place) that interest me. I find that I enjoy it more and find it easier to write as the range is wide open. Hoping to get a lot of long term searches as time goes on.
Best of luck.

Bruce: yeah, you’re right, it’s a long tail. It interested me because of the subject matter.

BTW: I like Bobby Darin too.
