MyBlogLog for Cats? I Think So.
November 4th, 2007 Posted by ChanyaHave you heard about Catster? Anyone? No? Well Catster is a social networking site for cats. Yes, you heard correctly. Cats. It’s sort of a cross between MyBlogLog and Digg, but instead of Diggin’ an article you “give a treat” to the cat you think is the coolest.
The website design is a bit busy and a little disorganized but I think it’s hilarious that the ads in the sidebar are for Arm & Hammer kitty litter and 9 Lives cat food.
I voted for Tripod and a pop-up window displayed stating “Tripod says meow, thanks for the treat!”
On a serious note, the site heavily promotes Morris’ Million Cat Rescue, a non-profit cat rescue program started on behalf of Morris the Cat, who was the official spokescat (get it, spokesperson, spokescat) for 9 Lives. Actually, after digging further I discovered there’s a nationwide campaign and tour associated with this effort. Randy Jackson of American Idol is a spokesperson. Never would have taken him for a cat guy.
By the way, Morris the Cat even has his own Wikipedia page. Turns out he was discovered in 1968 just minutes before he was scheduled to be euthanized. As such, all future “Morris the Cats” were rescue cats.
As of this writing there are over 141,000 cat profiles at Catster. There’s even a place to submit cat videos and photos in a contest – the winner gets a free trip to San Diego. And just joining Catster makes you eligible for winning an Olympus digital camera.
Isn’t it cool how Internet social networking has permeated so many aspects of daily life?
Now, for the big question: Cat or Dog Person?
For me, I’m a dog person. It’s not that I don’t like cats, I’m just allergic to them. Oh, and there is that small thing about not understanding their purpose in life . . . heh heh.

Dog person here, although I like cats too!
Great… now cats have a social networking site! I don’t really like cats, I don’t know why…
I am a cat person, but I don’t see the point of this site Catster.
This is one of those “why didn’t I think of it first” things. Love it!!
