Dude, Where’s My Blog? Part 3: Naming Your Blog
September 30th, 2007 Posted by ChanyaHow much would you pay for a domain name? Since I’m moving from Blogger to a hosted domain I thought, no problem, I’ll simply purchase the colorstruck.com domain. No sweat right? Wrong.
I tried to purchase colorstruck.com but someone owns it. They’re not using it mind you, they just own it. According to GoDaddy.com (who I paid to research this for me), the domain name is worth $230 - $680. Now, if colorstruck.com was a true business venture for me I might bite but since it isn’t I don’t see a need to spend that much money on the domain name. Also, I initially chose the name Colorstruck because I wanted to showcase my jewelry.
So I’ve been looking for a new domain name. Do you know there are people out there that purchase domain names just on the off chance that someone will come along and make them an offer for it? I guess this is similar to people who purchase real estate in an area that they think will grow. They purchase the land with no intention of doing anything with it; they just sit on it until someone comes along and makes them an offer. They then sell it for a profit. I guess you could make money doing this with blogs but you have to be smart about it, otherwise you could wind up stuck with a bunch of "land" no one wants.
Case in point: I decided to pursue obtaining the domain name blogsushi.com. This is a domain name that’s catchy and would fit perfectly for a blog that’s not a niche blog. If you go to the blogsushi.com site you’ll see that’s it’s parked (meaning not in use) and it’s registered with GoDaddy. So, I approached GoDaddy again about purchasing the site. They performed market research to determine the value of the domain name just as they did for colorstruck.com. They informed me that blogsushi.com was worth between $100 - $230. I thought, okay, let’s roll the dice and see what we get. Go, GoDaddy, Go.
So they contacted the owner, some dude in Spain. The domain name was registered in 2005 and expires in 2008. Nothing, and I mean, NOTHING has been done with this domain name since it was purchased.
Point of comparison: sitefever.com, a fairly popular site, has an 11-week income of $1,136.78 with 29,467 total visitors. It also has a Technorati authority of 204, a Google Page Rank of 2, and 318 RSS subscribers. It sold for $1,125.00. And they threw in the .net, .info, and .us domains to boot.
But the guy in Spain with blogsushi.com, a site that’s never been developed? Wait for it, wait for it:
He wants $6,800!
Is he crazy? If I only offered him $100 for the site (which I did) why the heck does he think I’d ever give him $6,800 for it? No one (unless they have money to spare) is gonna’ give him that much for that site. Especially since nothing’s been done with it.
So, what about you? How much would you pay for a domain name? Also, how did you go about selecting the name of your blog?

I agree. That guy will never sell that site at that price. I wouldn’t pay more than $50 for a domain name. And even then I’d have to be really interested in getting it. I guess the number of catchy domain names is decreasing but I believe you can come up with something clever that hasn’t been used.
What a scam! He shouldn’t profit from that kind of luck.
only Rp 100.000($10) for a year in Indonesia
That guy is so dumb. Anyway, I’d pay about ten bucks for a domain name…;-)
You don’t really need or want that lifestyle, it might hurt y’all slowly more…….Just tell him you
