Dude, Where’s My Blog? Part 1: Content

September 28th, 2007 Posted by Chanya

When I first started this blog a few months ago my primary goal was to promote my jewelry. Period. I make jewelry on the side and I’ve seen blogs where the owners talk about making jewelry while also posting gorgeous photos of their work. Some of the jewelry blogs also contain widgets that link to their online Etsy stores (Etsy is like eBay but for handcrafted items only). So I thought: what a great idea! I’ll start a blog about making jewelry.

As you can see, this blog now has nothing to do with jewelry. Since I’m in the process of getting the blog set up on a hosted domain using WordPress I thought it would be interesting to look at the evolution of this blog:

Do you see a common thread amongst the last 10 posts? Most of them fall under the “blog humor” and “blog tips” categories. Although my first posts were all over the place, looks like my writing has become more focused over time. If you’re a new blogger like me you might want to create a list like this that shows a chronological progression of your blog. Sure, you can look at your categories (called labels in Blogger), but that won’t tell the whole story because it doesn’t link your categories to a timeline. Also, I’ve noticed that the label totals (in Blogger) aren’t always accurate.

Examining your blog in this manner might help you decide where you want to take your blog. Or tell you where the blog is headed. Looks like mine is leaning toward focusing on blog humor and tips. That’s cool with me because I like writing about those topics.

So, what about you? Is your blog focused on a specific topic (I believe they’re called “niche blogs”) or is your blog more about your random thoughts and musings?

Stay tuned for Part 2 tomorrow which will talk about changes in a blog’s design.

No niche here. It’s nice because I have no restrictions but it’s harder to find a target audience.

I’m a “random thoughts” and “rambling” kind of gal. I think it would take a lot of time to keep up a nich blog. Interesting post on the evolution of your blog.

Jason and Heather: thanks for the comments. I agree. The beauty of a “non-niche” blog is that it gives you the freedom to write about whatever strikes your fancy.
