Sneeze Guard Mouse
August 25th, 2007 Posted by ChanyaOne of my pet peeves is watching someone at work use my computer (to show me some cool techie tip) only to have them sneeze, wipe their nose, grab my mouse, and continue working as if nothing just happened. If you read my post titled “Pet Peeve” Finger Lickin’ Baggers” you know that I’m a little germophobic.
Well, IOGEAR has just the solution: they sell a germ-free wireless mouse.
The device allegedly disinfects itself by killing or “deactivating” 99% of the bacteria that appears on its surface. And on top of that, it’s wireless, has an operating range of 6 feet, and looks cool:

It has a special “nano” coating that provides the protection. The company provides a really technical explanation on how the coating eradicates germs, but it’s way over my head. All I know is that it kills cooties.
Also, I assume using the mouse puts some of the antibacterial “juice” on your hand. Over time, I assume your hand would become immune to common germs. That would be great. I’d never have to shake someone’s sweaty hand and then immediately reach for some Purell.
Hold up - I just read their disclaimer:
“Disclaimer: This device cannot be used as antibiotic or anti-viral medication. Do not ingest the surface material of the device under any circumstances. If you have symptoms of bacteria or viral infection please consult with your physician and seek medical attention immediately. This device does not eliminate the entire universe of bacteria or viruses. It is not a replacement for cleanliness and good personal hygiene. Please keep your hands and work area clean for optimal protection.”
Damn. I was hoping I could use it like Zicam - if I started feeling sick I could lick the mouse and it’s antibacterial coating would kill the germs in my body. In my opinion IOGEAR missed the boat here: imagine a programmer working late at night trying to meet a short deadline. He/she starts feeling sick. With a few licks they could be back on the job rockin’ mad code. But no, it’s not to be, thanks to the shortsightedness of IOGEAR.
Nonetheless, I’m still buying this mouse for work since it only costs about $39. And heck, I might even give it a few licks for good measure.

Sounds like a cool gadget. They should use that nano stuff on keyboards and door handles.
I am a germ-a-phobe too. I can relate.
Interesting gadget. I have a thing for gadgets (and germs!) so it will probably end up on my desk at some point.
